ACEA 2024: New developments in the standards on lubricants for vehicles and heavy machinery

ACEA 2024: novedades en la normativa de lubricantes para vehículos y maquinaria pesada
21 January 2025

The new European standards for lubricants for vehicle and heavy machinery engines are now a reality. The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) has already published its oil specifications update for these uses, which will be mandatory by the end of 2025.

This standard, which is reviewed periodically, is essential to ensure the quality, performance, and compatibility of lubricants for the engines of trucks, buses, and tractors, as well as for different types of machinery. Next, we’ll explain what this consists of in more detail.

What is the ACEA standard and why is it important?

ACEA is the organization that represents the 15 most important European motor vehicle manufacturers. Its functions include establishing specifications for lubricants for vehicles and machines operating in Europe. Their rigorous standards, based on extensive laboratory testing and real-world engine testing, ensure that the lubricants meet performance and durability requirements while complying with European emissions regulations.

In this way, critical aspects such as the lubricant's resistance to oxidation, deposit formation, engine wear, or fuel consumption efficiency are evaluated. This rigor provides users with the assurance that they are using a product that will protect their engine and contribute to optimal performance.

What's new in the 2024 update for heavy-duty vehicles

The ACEA 2024 regulation for vehicle and heavy machinery engines introduces the new F01 category, specifically designed to maximize fuel economy for the latest models. This category joins the existing E4, E7, E8, and E11 categories, thus adapting to new technologies and emissions requirements.

  • E4 and E7. For engines without diesel particulate filters (DPF) or with more basic aftertreatment systems, with the difference being that E4 offers significantly extended drain intervals.
  • E8 and E11. For Euro VI and future Euro VII engines, equipped with DPF and SCR (selective catalytic reduction) systems. E8 is the most advanced specification, offering maximum protection and extended oil change intervals.
  • F01. The new category focuses on fuel efficiency, with specific viscosity requirements to minimize friction.

When does ACEA 2024 for vehicles and heavy machinery go into effect?

The new ACEA for vehicles and heavy machinery has already gone into effect, but it will not be mandatory until October 15, 2025. From that date on, all new lubricants for heavy-duty vehicles marketed in Europe must comply with this regulation. This update represents a challenge for lubricant manufacturers and distributors, who must adapt their products to the new specifications.

How to choose a quality lubricant

Finally, remember that it is necessary to consult the manufacturer's manual to find out the correct specification for your vehicle. Using a lubricant that does not meet specifications can negatively affect engine performance, increase fuel consumption, and even cause damage.

At Repsol, we are committed to innovation and quality, which is why our different product ranges always strictly comply with the most recent ACEA standards, thus guaranteeing high-performance solutions. Furthermore, in our portal's search engine you can find the lubricant that a particular vehicle or machine needs simply by typing its name.
