Repsol's biodegradable lubricants: this is how the impact on the marine ecosystem is minimized
04 February 2025

Ports are complex environments where industrial activity coexists with sensitive marine ecosystems. At Repsol, aware of this reality, we have taken on the commitment to minimize the environmental impact in these critical areas.

That's why we are carrying out a transition towards solutions that protect the environment without compromising the performance of port operations. There the role of biodegradable lubricants stands out, which are those that are quickly biodegraded; in other words, that their compounds degrade at least 60% over 28 days in aquatic environments under the conditions established by the test OECD 301B >60%. Moreover, they aren't toxic for humans or the environment.

Repsol's biodegradable lubricants

In order to respond to the specific needs of port machinery, we have developed two specific products: MAKER BIO TELEX hydraulic oil and PROTECTOR BIO CALCIUM EP R2 grease.

Formulated with synthetic esters, MAKER BIO TELEX is a high-performance lubricant that offers excellent anti-wear protection, a broad range of use temperatures, and high resistance to oxidation. Its biodegradability minimizes the environmental impact in case of accidental discharges, an ever-present risk in port operations.

Its filterability and compatibility with joints also stand out, which make it an ideal option for hydraulic systems, hydrostatic couplings, and reducers in forestry, public works, and agriculture machinery.

For its part, PROTECTOR BIO CALCIUM EP R2 is a high-performance grease formulated with biodegradable oils and thickened with calcium soap. Its exceptional resistance to water and high adhesion make it perfect for applications in wet and high-load environments, such as reservoir gates, but also agricultural machinery or forestry work. Moreover, it has a capacity to protect against corrosion and wear, which ensures a long useful life of the lubricated components.

Both products not only offer exceptional performance, comparable to that of their conventional counterparts, but also have the Ecolabel certification, seal of environmental excellence that ensures their biodegradability and their low impact on the aquatic and terrestrial environment.
