Repsol joins forces with Tekniker to develop lubricants using nanotechnology

Repsol has made strides in innovation in the field of lubricants thanks to its collaboration with Tekniker, a leading research center in Éibar (Gipuzkoa). This joint project focused on the application of nanotechnology in developing additives, a key component for oils.

One of the most important functions of additives is reducing friction between moving parts of the engine. By reducing this friction, less wear and tear on components is achieved and the engine's useful life is prolonged. Savings on fuel are also made, as less energy is required to overcome resistance to movement.

Tekniker, thanks to its extensive experience and resources in the field of nanotechnology, has been an essential partner in this project. Its team of researchers has worked on the synthesis of a zinc oxide nanoadditive functionalized with oleic acid, exploring different processes to optimize its stability and effectiveness.

The results are promising. By incorporating this nanoadditive into a conventional lubricating oil, friction has been reduced by 14%, while maintaining protection levels against wear and tear. In fact, the research was recently presented by Iker Elexpe, Tekniker researcher, at the Lubmat-Ibertrib 2024 congress, with the presentation "New Generation of Fuel Economy Nanolubricants Based on ZnO Dispersion".

Although there is still some way to go for these advances to reach the market, this project represents an important milestone in the development of more efficient and sustainable solutions. This project is aligned with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, as the model transition requires changes that range from energy production to final use.

That is why Repsol not only works on developing renewable fuels, but also makes an effort to reduce consumption through innovation in lubricants. Collaboration with research centers such as Tekniker allows us to drive these advances, combining our knowledge and experience to obtain get the best results.
